Federal First Step Act includes Senator Bill Cassidy’s provision for screening inmates for dyslexia

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), a member of the Senate health and education committee, today announced that his provision providing for the screening of inmates for dyslexia is included in the new version of the First Step Act (S. 3649) legislation endorsed by President Trump to reform America’s criminal justice system.  

LDRFA has advocated for this legislation. As Senator Cassidy said, “Having treated patients in prisons, I learned that illiteracy often leads someone to turn to a life of crime. Dyslexia is a leading cause of illiteracy, so to address illiteracy and incarceration, we must better address dyslexia.”

The Dyslexie Font makes reading easier for people with dyslexia

A graphic solution to dyslexia?

Graphic designer, Christian Boer, created a font that makes reading easier for people like himself who are dyslexic. According to Boer, people with dyslexia often have difficulties reading because of certain “common reading errors” including “swapping, mirroring, changing, turning and melting letters together.” Boer’s Dyslexie Font is a typeface with uniquely-shaped letters that remove these common reading errors.

How VR is Used to Help Children With Learning Disabilities, Autism

Students with learning often do not learn social skills or pick up on social cues at the same pace as their peers. The United States Department of Education is betting on virtual reality (VR) to help students with high-functioning autism, behavior management and students with learning disabilities in schools or inclusive classroom across the country by cultivating these skills in a safe, controlled, virtual environment ,resources for teachers of students with learning disabilities. The project is called VOISS: Virtual Reality Opportunities to Implement Social Skills.
