The Honorable Assembly Person Name
Re: Assembly Bill No. A04330A
Dear Mr./Ms. (surname):
As the (parent, guardian, advocate) of (a) school age child (children) I am requesting your support for Assembly Bill No. A04330A sponsored by Assemblywoman Simon to amend the New York State Education Law for provisions and protections for students with dyslexia or related learning disorders.
Approximately 15% of children have dyslexia, a brain based learning disability that makes word recognition, spelling and reading success a very difficult task. Research shows that if students are not reading on grade level by the third grade, they only have a 1 in 8 chance of catching up to their peers. Often these children fail to be properly identified and diagnosed and in addition to an adverse academic outcome, experience emotional and social problems as well.
Please help make a difference for these children. Thank you for your support.
